  • [Explanation] Specialised vs generalist translator or interpreter

    1. Study Title: Specialisation in translation
    2. Link: https://translationjournal.net/journal/56specialist.htm
    3. Opinions of writer:
1- Rapid turnover of translation works => work must be done rapidly => translator must be knowledgable (specialised) in the field of translation.
2- The need to specialise is not disputed. What the writer disputes is the meaning of 'specialisation'.
3- Some people look at other professions as (generalist vs specialist) but this cannot be applied to translators.
4- The term 'specialist' is abused by translators.
5- A discpline cam have a variety of sub-discplines. How come they are specialised?
7- Disagree : 1) Translators must be subject matter experts. Refute: Knowledge expands. 2) Specialisaion vs background information

Conclusion: More precise definition of specialisaion is needed.
